WaikatoLink Limited is offering University staff up to $20,000 in Tech Jumpstart resource funding to help transform your idea into reality.
What is Tech Jumpstart?
Tech Jumpstart is a funding initiative brought to you by WaikatoLink Limited and UniCom. It is primarily targeted at researchers who need funding to begin developing their technology concepts. All you have to do is tell us your idea. Ideas that are judged to have significant potential could receive:
- Up to $20,000 in resource funding to begin technology development
- Commercialisation support from WaikatoLink
- Access to additional funding for continued development
Do I qualify for Tech Jumpstart funding?
Any University of Waikato staff member can apply AND Technology ideas can be from any research area!
The main criteria are:
- Technology ideas should have potential market applications
- Projects should be proof-of-concept or technology development studies.
However, compelling applications outside of these criteria will also be considered.
Applying for Tech Jumpstart funding is as easy as filling out a simple 2-page application form.

Tech Jumpstart Success Stories
The Tech Jumpstart initiative was first run by WaikatoLink in 2007, with very successful results. The outcomes of the funded projects were so promising that 80% went on to gain further funding for continued development, 40% are now complete and ready to be licensed, and 1 project formed the foundation for a spin-off company.
Now, three years later, we have decided that it’s time to run Tech Jumpstart again!
For this round, UniCom, which is a consortium of New Zealand universities, is also rolling Tech Jumpstart out in 4 other universities across the country
